Self Tanning 101

The warmer temps have us all wanting to be tan, but in the safest way possible.  I spent way too many years in the tanning bed, but thankfully the last 5 I have learned to master the self tan.  While I am no expert, I have learned a few tips and tricks along the way that help me achieve the best tan possible.  I’ve gathered my favorite products for different skin undertones along with some tips to help you have that golden glow.

Tan Prep

1. Exfoliate and shave the day BEFORE your tan and then exfoliate again the morning of the tan.  This will ensure that you’ve removed all dead skin and that your pores are not open which can cause “chicken skin” after the tanner is applied.

2. Moisturize your hands, elbows, knees, and feet.  These dry areas of the body can often look scaly and overdeveloped.  Using moisturizer prior them helps them to look like the rest of your body.  I recommend a body cream rather than a body lotion.  This cream provides more moisture to these areas.

3. Pick a self tanner that is right for YOUR skintone.  Just like foundation is based upon your undertone, so is self tanner.  By picking a product that works best for your complexion, you’ll come out looking less orange and more natural.  I’m linking a few of my favorites for each group; Yellow/Neutral and Pink/Olive.  The video below also shows and explains the color differences in more detail.

4. Use a soft mitt and apply the tanner in circular motions.  You’ve probably seen several other methods for application.  While I’m not saying they’re wrong, this is by far the most successful way for me to apply it.  You can do your back with a special applicator, also linked.

5. Finally, 15-20 minutes after application use a makeup wipe or washcloth to gently wipe off hands, feet and ankles.  This also keeps these areas from overdeveloping.  Nothing screams “I used self tanner” more than hands and feet darker than the rest of your body.

Most self tanners will last 5-7 days.  The key to their longevity is moisturizing twice a day.  You can use a regular body cream or a gradual self tan lotion like this one to maintain your glow.

Now if your tan goes awry or you want a complete fresh start every 7 days, which I prefer, a tan removal product combined with the tan prep process is recommended.

I could probably write a novel about this as there are many other tips not included here.  Again, the video goes into more depth and as always if you have any questions, feel free to reach out and ask.  Happy tanning!

With love,
