Family, Fun and the Fourth

Well here we are, approaching yet another holiday and it isn’t going to be “normal.”  When my husband told me in March we would still be dealing with this in July, I didn’t believe him.  Write this down; I’m admitting he was right. LOL!  While I have’t liked having to change routines and do things differently, I am learning to enjoy and view each day in a new way.

Growing up, July 4th was always spent at my maternal grandparents home with a huge pool party.  Friends, neighbors and family would gather for a day of swimming, fellowship and of course food.  It would last into the evening where the men of the family would put on a potentially illegal fireworks show (thanks NC for the silly law).  Since their passing, we have continued to have a family gathering from time to time but on a smaller scale and at our beach homes.  This year, I’m taking it upon myself to start some new traditions with my little crew since gatherings aren’t the best option.

As with any proper Southern holiday, food is a must!  While hot dogs and hamburgers are the typical fair of the Fourth, this Taco Salad is both festive and delicious.  And of course we can’t forget the dessert! Both of these “grab & go” items make the table look pretty and even have a healthy factor for those counting calories.

In leiu of fireworks, Aubrey and I are going to get a little crafty.  Now this Mama doesn’t like a mess, so this one literally takes 4 items to complete.  Make sure and join us on Thursday in Holly’s Glam Gals to see how this one turns out.  In the meantime, you can gather your supplies or go ahead and try it yourself using these directions.  Also, take the fun outdoors with a Scavenger Hunt!  If you have multiple children this is a great way they can entertain themselves while you get some quiet time.

Another staple for us is music.  When we’re outdoors at home, on the boat or at the beach we have to have some jams.  This playlist bleeds red, white and blue in my opinion.

Finally, I’m all about the holiday apparel.  From my swimsuit to my hat I’ll be sporting my American pride.  I’m most excited about my new custom-made top from Dirty Water Designs.  Brooke never fails to meet my crazy requests with quality, unique work.  Check them out next time you’re in the market for some custom hats, shirts or other products.

As we embark on creating new traditions may we never forget how blessed we are to live in a land of freedom.  Whether we agree with everything or everyone, having the choice to do so or not shouldn’t be taken for granted.  Above all, may God bless you this holiday and may God continue to bless the USA!

With love,
